Mastercard launches Partial Approval service for convenient combined payments for purchases

Kyiv, 16 May 2024 – Mastercard has introduced a new payment service in Ukraine called Partial Approval, which allows users to combine different payment methods for a single purchase. If there is not enough money on one bank card, users can immediately cover the remaining amount using another payment card or cash, without interrupting the transaction or splitting it into two separate receipts. This new service provides users more flexibility in choosing payment methods and ensures maximum convenience by allowing to combine different methods for successful purchases.

The Partial Approval service is already available at OKKO and WOG petrol stations. Additionally, cardholders can use this new functionality for P2P money transfers on iPay.ua. The list of service partners will be gradually expanded.

“Mastercard strives to offer its customers maximum flexibility in payment options and seamless access to funds on their card accounts. The new solution will provide Ukrainians with even more freedom and a wider choice of payment options at retail outlets. I am grateful to our partners who have already enabled Partial Approval, and we are actively working to expand the partner ecosystem to make the service available to more users,” said Valerii Novikov, Director, Business Development, Mastercard Ukraine and Moldova.

How does the Mastercard Partial Approval service work?

  • The user pays for the purchase with a Mastercard® card at a participating partner network location.
  • If the card balance is insufficient to cover the purchase amount and the issuing bank approves the use of the Partial Approval service, the customer will receive an SMS or a notification in the mobile application indicating the authorized amount.
  • The cashier informs the customer about the possibility of using the Partial Approval service and offers alternative payment methods to cover the remaining amount.
  • The customer pays the remaining balance using another method, such as a card from any bank and different payment systems, or cash.

If the customer does not wish to pay the remaining amount, they can either complete the purchase for the authorized amount, potentially limiting the items purchased, or cancel the transaction altogether.

The Partial Approval service is currently available to Mastercard cardholders of the following banks: Bank Vostok, Bank Pivdenny, Globus Bank, Idea Bank, Credit Agricole, Kredobank, OTP, Oschadbank, PRAVEX BANK, FUIB, Raiffeisen Bank, TASKOMBANK, UnexBank, RwSbank, and their number will increase. However, the issuing bank reserves the right to decide on the use of the Partial Approval service. For more information on the availability of the service for your card, please contact the issuing bank.

Technically, the Partial Approval service is already supported by the POS terminals of Oshchadbank and Raiffeisen Bank in the WOG and OKKO petrol stations, respectively. Additionally, the service has been technically integrated into the terminals of Pivdenny Bank.

The Partial Approval service complements a number of innovative services that Mastercard is introducing to expand cardholders' payment options in the retail environment.  For example, the ‘Purchase with cash withdrawal’ service allows users to withdraw up to UAH 6,000 from their card account when paying for goods with their card at the checkouts of dozens of retailers across Ukraine. Another Mastercard service, Cash to Card, allows users to top up their bank cards with cash at retail checkouts. Thanks to integration with the Diia app, the limit for a single card top-up can be up to UAH 50,000, depending on the retailer.
