Johannesburg, South Africa - 15 April 2018: Mastercard has been recognised as South Africa’s top employer brand in the financial services sector at the recent South Africa Best Employer Brand Awards 2019. Organised by the Employer Branding Institute (EBI), the awards honour top companies in South Africa that are exemplary in their Human Resources efforts, and have a reputation of being a great place to work.

Based on intensive research and recommendations, the EBI advisory board evaluates brands across sectors according to several criteria including Corporate Social Responsibility, talent development, diversity and inclusion, and employee engagement among others.

“We are proud to be selected as a top employer brand where the best and brightest people prefer to work,” says Mark Elliott, division president for Mastercard Southern Africa. “At Mastercard, we thrive on innovation so we can change the way the world pays and gets paid. This commitment has allowed us to attract and retain employees who like to work in a creative, challenging environment. Our culture of innovation and inclusion, coupled with ongoing learning and development opportunities, provides excellent opportunities for growth, fulfillment and career success.”

Mastercard’s business strategy of “doing well by doing good” empowers employees to make a positive impact to society while growing the business through their daily work. Through its financial inclusion initiatives, Mastercard brings vital financial services to underserved communities, driving economies and allowing more people to participate in the formal financial sector.

“Every day at Mastercard we work to make a difference in communities, whether that’s preventing hunger through our Tap to Feed campaign, funding CSR programmes such as Junior Achievement South Africa to help women entrepreneurs flourish or by mentoring young girls through our Girls 4 Tech programme to inspire and prepare them for a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Such initiatives help build our brand as an employer of choice, while retaining top talent,” says Elliott.

Mastercard is also known for building a diverse and inclusive workforce, offering its employees a flexible, multi-cultural work environment that helps them balance their work demands with family commitments. For example, Mastercard introduced ‘Relaunch your Career’ in South Africa, a comprehensive return-to-work programme targeted at women who have been away from the workplace for one year or more and are keen to return to work on a permanent basis.

“Our dedication to cultivating a diverse environment for all employees that respects and celebrates their individual strengths, views and experiences is the foundation of our inclusive culture. This leads to better engagement, innovation and productivity,” says Elliott.
