Mastercard appoints Gustavo Arruda as chief economist for Latin America and the Caribbean
June 25, 2024 | Miami, FLMastercard today announced that Gustavo Arruda has been named chief economist for the company’s Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region. Based in São Paulo, Arruda will be responsible for analyzing macroeconomic trends through the lens of the consumer and deliver actionable insights on economic issues for customers, partners, and policymakers.
Arruda will report to Michelle Meyer, chief global economist and head of the Mastercard Economics Institute, a macro-economic think tank that brings powerful data-driven insights to life, and meaningful engagements with customers, partners, and policymakers.
Gustavo joins Mastercard from BNP Paribas where he most recently served as the Head of LATAM Economics and Chief Brazil Economist. In this capacity, he frequently shared insights and perspectives on economic conditions and trends in Latin America with investors, stakeholders, and specialized media. Under his leadership, the Central Bank of Brazil recognized BNP Paribas as a top forecaster.
Gustavo holds a Ph.D. and a master’s degree in applied economics from the São Paulo School of Economics at Fundação Getúlio Vargas, and a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of São Paulo.
