Disaster in Texas: Here’s how Mastercard is helping
February 23, 2021 | By Susan WarnerNearly a week after an Arctic blast took hold across the country, millions of people are still under winter weather alerts and millions of homes remain without water. As of Monday, about 13,000 customers in Texas remained without electricity and about 10 million people statewide were still without safe drinking water.
The emergency started last week after a rare bout of freezing cold temperatures, snow and ice arrived in Texas and crippled many of the state’s basic services, especially the power grid. The outage also affected water treatment plants, which were forced to shut down.
To help those who need emergency disaster relief assistance, Mastercard will donate $50,000 USD to the American Red Cross beyond our annual corporate commitment to support the organization’s disaster response, and will waive interchange fees with select organizations for 30 days, starting today (see list below). The American Red Cross is working around the clock to make sure people have a safe place to go and have access to critical resources like water.
Please consider donating to the American Red Cross as well to support those in need.
