Mastercard and Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison join forces to showcase cutting-edge technology in urban mobility

The innovative collaboration aims to explore advancement of intelligence-driven fleet and connected vehicle commerce in Indonesia

As digital advancements continue to reshape industries, businesses need to innovate to remain competitive. In response to this, Mastercard and Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (Indosat or IOH) have teamed up to showcase cutting-edge technologies in transportation and payment systems, through a prototype that integrates Mastercard’s in-vehicle payments solution with Indosat’s AI-powered fleet management system, NEXTFleet. This collaboration marks a key milestone for both companies, demonstrating the immense potential of a seamless and interconnected mobility ecosystem, and how mobility and commerce could come together to redefine urban mobility in the country.

This initiative draws on Mastercard’s global expertise in urban mobility solutions while leveraging Indosat’s NEXTFleet platform. Mastercard processes billions of urban mobility transactions globally on its network every year – US$59.4 billion in 2022 alone – and has been addressing travel needs for everyone, everywhere. By prototyping these solutions, the initiative seeks to explore ways to enhance driver experiences and improve operational efficiency for fleet operators and public transportation authorities, while providing automotive manufacturers with innovative technology to elevate their product offerings for individual customers.

This prototype showcases Mastercard’s in-vehicle payments solution that enables drivers to make secure, seamless transactions — be it for refueling, toll payments, EV charging or even at drive-throughs — directly from their vehicle’s dashboard, without the need to leave their vehicle. Leveraging Mastercard’s tokenization and biometric innovation, drivers can securely store payment credentials in their vehicle’s infotainment system, then authenticate payments simply using their fingerprints. Indosat’s NEXTFleet complements this by enabling companies to plan, schedule, and monitor fleets in real-time through mobile applications and IoT devices, significantly cutting operational costs, increase efficiency, and boost productivity. The potential use cases of in-vehicle payments solution and AI-powered fleet management system – either on its own or integrated together – are countless and highlight the promise of connected mobility for the future of urban transportation, especially as more people migrate from rural areas to urban cities.

In Indonesia, the rise in digital transactions, projected to grow by 25.77 percent in 20241, alongside the increasing number of motor vehicles — exceeding 157 million in 20232, presents a significant opportunity for innovative solutions that enhance mobility experiences. By improving payments efficiency and fleet management, the collaboration aims to showcase a connected mobility ecosystem that serves the needs of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM), fleet operators, and business alike.

Vikram Sinha, President Director and Chief Executive Officer of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, said, “At Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, we are dedicated to leveraging AI and innovative technologies to revolutionize urban mobility in Indonesia. This collaboration with Mastercard highlights our ambition to become AI TechCo, reflecting out larger purpose to empowering Indonesia through smarter, more efficient solutions that enhance the quality of life for every Indonesian.”

Aileen Goh, country manager and president director, Indonesia, Mastercard, said, “Mastercard is committed to driving innovation in various sectors globally, including digital payments, sustainability, cybersecurity and tourism. Mastercard’s work on mobility-as-a-service and in-vehicle payment solutions globally is part of a broader effort to explore cutting-edge technologies in collaboration with industry leaders. Through this collaboration with Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, we are showcasing the possibilities that could unfold when innovation, mobility and commerce come together, and what the future holds with more connected, efficient, and sustainable urban mobility ecosystems in Indonesia.”

The collaboration builds on Mastercard’s decade-long journey to create seamless, frictionless mobility solutions as well as more streamlined and intuitive payment experiences for commuters across the globe. In Germany, for example, Mastercard has partnered with Mercedes Benz to introduce in-vehicle payments so that drivers can make payments at fuel stations directly from their vehicle, simply using their fingerprints. As showcased in Mastercard’s Urban Mobility Center in Amsterdam, the company is committed to transforming how people move through cities, and in sharing its expertise, best practices, innovation and rapid prototyping capabilities with partners from around the world to solve pressing challenges.

This collaboration between Mastercard and Indosat underscores their leadership in technology innovation. By jointly steering the future of in-vehicle payment technologies and digital fleet management solutions, they are not only pushing the boundaries of industry standards but also propelling the advancement of innovation. This collaboration serves as a testament to their commitment to drive transformation and enhance the urban mobility experience in Indonesia.
